Australian PHP Developer Conference 2016
Last week Alec and Scott attended the second Australian PHP Developer Conference in Sydney. This is the second year in a row that we have attended this conference with Ben, Zac and Scott attending last year. The conference took place over two days with workshops on Thursday 14th and presentations on Friday 15th April. Like last year, the conference focused heavily on PHP and its use in web development.
This year was different with the inclusion of a day of workshops as opposed to two days of presentations. The workshops were optional but allowed for a more in-depth and hands on learning experience. The ones we attended focused on web security and RESTful API development, two highly important concepts for what we do as a bespoke web development agency.
Security will always be a critical and ever evolving component of the web. The workshop, presented by Wim Godden, illustrated the ways and reasons malicious attacks are carried out as well as effective methods of preventing and protecting against such attacks. The focus was holistic and touched on frontend, backend and database security. The perspective gained was excellent as it also encouraged you to think critically when considering the security of an application.
RESTful APIs are becoming more popular on the web and effective API development in general will always be a valuable skill for any web developer. The RESTful API workshop, presented by Ben Edmunds, focused on the basic and best practices when creating your own RESTful APIs. API development is something we are moving further into in the future making this workshop a great learning opportunity. There was a strong focus on hands on development as Ben walked us through creating and testing our own basic API. This was informative as we came face to face with many common issues and questions in the workshop and had the opportunity to question and discuss our experience.
The second day of the conference included a number of interesting presentations given by key PHP and web development individuals and groups from across the globe. The talks ranged in topics from PHP and its development as a language to new and emerging technologies and tools that can be used in the web space. Some other important concepts including security and testing were also covered.
The conference was a great opportunity for us to be exposed to new concepts as well as refreshing ourselves on the basics. It was also a fantastic avenue for meeting and mingling with members of the broader web development community. We are looking forward to putting the experience gained into practice.
